I’m Jennifer Horst, a documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
I create documentary brand photography, editorial portraits, and filmed portrait interview experiences for brands and individuals who are stepping into what they’ve been building toward.
How I Came to This Work
I used to think the problem was technical.
Better lighting. Clearer creative direction. A more precise session plan.
The work kept getting better. But something was still missing.
Before focusing on photography full-time, I spent more than 15 years in corporate and commercial video production. Two film degrees – including a master’s in documentary production. Years creating content for large organizations where clarity, authority, and storytelling mattered at scale.
I filmed WWII veterans and corporate executives. I directed sessions with some of the most accomplished people in their fields.
And what I kept watching, over and over, was this: people who were brilliant in the room went flat the moment a camera appeared.
Not because they weren’t confident.
Not because they weren’t photogenic.
Because they were being asked to perform.
To smile a certain way. To pose a certain way. To present a version of themselves that felt slightly off.
That disconnect always showed up in the final work. You could feel it – a kind of visual dishonesty that even the untrained eye registers.
I know exactly how to close that gap. Because I spent years on both sides of it.
Why I Work the Way I Do
My approach is rooted in documentary principles.
That means I don’t rush.
I don’t manufacture moments.
And I don’t ask you to become someone else for the sake of an image.
Instead, I create space for conversation, presence, and trust. I guide you through the process so you’re never left wondering what to do, but I don’t ask you to perform.
We talk. You settle. The camera documents what’s already there.

A Personal Note
Beyond the work, I’m a wife and mother of two, a lifelong documentary film enthusiast, and someone who believes that every person’s story matters – whether they’re building a business or raising humans who will change the world.
That belief is what led me to create The Postpartum Project: a portrait interview experience dedicated to documenting the real, unfiltered stories of motherhood. Not the highlight reel. The truth.
Because some stories deserve to be held with more depth than a snapshot allows.
