Stop Playing the Supporting Character in Your Own Life

Postpartum Project portrait of Jennifer Horst by Redhead Creative Media in Chapel Hill, NC.

You feel exposed when you try to show up as the person you’re becoming, don’t you?

I know exactly what that’s like. And I want to say something clearly: it’s not imposter syndrome.

It’s the fear of being seen in your new, powerful iteration.

When that fear hits, we shrink back into the old version of ourselves that feels safe. But that old self doesn’t pull us forward. It hinders us. It makes us smaller and too reliant on the past.

The old you is safe. The new you is a target for judgment.

But whose judgment, exactly? We rely so much on other people’s opinions when really the only person we should be answering to is ourselves.

This is the natural growing pain of moving out of who you were and into who you’re becoming.

The Friction Is Real, And It’s Supposed to Be

Let me be honest with you. The discomfort you feel when you try to show up as your new self? It doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It means you’re doing the hard thing, the necessary thing.

Shedding the old version of yourself isn’t graceful.

It’s not a pivot deck or a rebrand announcement. It’s an internal process that happens slowly, often painfully, and always on its own timeline.

No amount of external encouragement changes that.

You can have all the support from the outside world you could possibly dream of, but if you don’t make that internal decision, if you don’t claim that stake and say this is what I do, this is who I am, this is who I’m becoming, nobody else can do it for you.

From Jennifer Horst Photography to Identity Photographer

I didn’t become an identity photographer overnight. This has been a slow burn.

I launched Redhead Creative Media in 2014. In 2020, I reconnected with photography and wanted to build a business – but I didn’t have the confidence to build it under the Redhead Creative Media name. So I hid.

I hid behind the comfort of a title: Jennifer Horst Photography.

I told myself I’d do headshots and branding. That’s the gateway, right? And in some ways, yes, everybody needs branding.

But at the heart of what I actually do, I want to get to know my clients. I want to help them become who they are working towards. When you do that, you need imagery that aligns with that evolution.

It’s not about performing. It’s not about showing up as you think other people need to see you. It’s about who you are inside and how you want to exist in your own story.

I wasn’t existing in my story. I was hiding behind the comfort of a title.

The shift happened when I asked a client: what comes to mind when you think of me, when you think of my business?

She answered without hesitation: “I think of you not as a brand photographer, but as an identity photographer.”

That phrase stuck. Because that’s exactly right. I help people understand who they are and who they’re becoming. We do that through imagery that tells a story, creates emotion, and documents their life.

Claiming that? Still scary. But absolutely necessary.

You Don’t Need a Script. You Need to Start.

The transition from hiding behind a name – a brand, a title, a version of yourself the world already accepted – to owning what you actually do and who you actually are is terrifying.

I’m not going to pretend otherwise.

But the only way you grow, the only way you evolve, is if you do it from the inside.

No one can outsource that decision for you. No brand name, no rebrand, no new headshot is going to do it. It starts when you say,  out loud, to yourself, “this is who I’m becoming,” and then you take the steps to move toward that person.

When you make that internal decision and stand by it, something shifts. You stop playing the supporting character in your own life, and you become the lead.

So stop waiting for a script. Stop waiting for someone else to hand you what you’re supposed to do, or who you’re supposed to become. Stop waiting for it and start doing it yourself.

If you’re ready to step into the frame and own the version of yourself that’s currently emerging, it’s time. Let’s document who you are right now.
